September is almost done! October is just around the corner! And we like that!
Why? Because it is the month of the Trick or Treat!!! You guessed it: Halloween!!!
Halloween has its roots in the ancient, pre-Christian Celtic festival of Samhain, which was celebrated on the night of October 31. The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, believed that the dead returned to earth on Samhain.
Samhain (pronounced 'sow'inn') has been celebrated in Britain for centuries and has its origin in Pagan Celtic traditions. It was the time of year when the veils between this world and the Otherworld were believed to be at their thinnest: when the spirits of the dead could most readily mingle with the living once again. Later, when the festival was adopted by Christians, they celebrated it as All Hallows' Eve, followed by All Saints Day, though it still retained elements of remembering and honoring the dead.
Talking about Samhain, did you know that in the UK exist Hell’s Belles Women’s Motorcycle Club, the United Kingdom's only independent women's Backpatch Club?
Hell's Belles Women's Motorcycle Club was founded on Samhain 2010 (Halloween to those not in the know -31st October).
"We began as a group of female friends out on a bike and rock night, as we were all going to be drinking we arrived in style in a white minibus."
The story continues and we find more interesting facts!
"As we got out someone shouted over to us 'Ohhhh who are you lot?' We looked around at each other and then Louise shouted back ‘Hell's Belles.’ That's where our crazy adventure started.
Louise had always dreamed of having a women's club called Hell's Belles. Now the ball had started to roll and the ladies decided to follow through on the idea and this is how the club started.
Since the majority of the ladies were Pagan they decided that the club should be based on the Pagan way of doing things and hence the design of the patches -a witch riding a motorcycle -designed by Rachael, another of the founder members. Not all of the club is pagan. They have members of other religions too, they do not push paganism on anyone.
The club has always been a female-only motorcycle club, and will always be that way. Sorry lads you can't join them, although they do have events where the guys are invited to tag along, so if you are interested in meeting them, don't worry, you will have the chance.
Unfortunately, due to family pressures, Louise could no longer hold her position in the club and the High Priestess/President role was passed over to Rachael.
There have been others that have passed through the club with similar issues, however through everything the club core has stayed strong.
But that's not all.
In 2016, after 18 months of hard work, building, plumbing, etc. The Cauldron http://www.thecauldron82.co.uk/ -the member's clubhouse -opened for its very first event. 'The Jalepenos' rocked well into the night. The same band that was playing the first night that Louise had decided that her group of female bike riding friends were in future to be known as the Hell's Belles.
We find out that the ladies are now the only independent Women Motorcycle Club( WMC) in the United Kingdom to have their own clubhouse, in fact, are the only independent WMC in the UK.
So to all the ladies out there: don't forget that the Hell's Belles are still going strong and welcome any new like-minded female motorcycle riders who are interested in joining this great club.
And now, after we found out about this amazing women motorcycle club, let's party!
What is about? This year the ladies are holding another Samhain party. Find the event here https://www.facebook.com/events/281734922313197
When Saturday, October 28 at 7 PM - 2 AM
Where The Cauldron, Globe Industrial Estate, Darbyshire Street, Radcliffe, M26 2TA
This will be the seventh club party but, only the second to be held at the clubhouse. The Samhain party doubles as the club birthday since that is when the club was first established. Originally they held parties at club members houses and this meant that was always limited in space and sound level… now they have their own parties in the clubhouse with more room for more guests and with a live band playing. This year band has been booked for some time and they are raring to play all their rock tracks.
The party is for invited guests only, however, if anyone is interested in coming they can contact the members prior so that an invite can be sent, can be contacted via
